“Processed food” doesn’t have to be a bad word: it just means any food that’s prepared for consumption, which is basically everything. The danger of highly processed foods, though, is that they often have all the nutrients stripped out of their more natural forms, or have loads of added sugar.

Low-fat or flavoured yoghurts are one of the worst offenders: the fat provides a lot of yoghurt’s flavour, so when it’s taken out, added sugar steps in to make it taste good — and turns a potentially nutritious snack into junk food. As a rule, a pot of flavoured or low-fat yoghurt has two or three times the sugar of natural or Greek yoghurt.
